History and Facts – Lake Norman
Located in the southern piedmont of western North Carolina and just 18 miles
northwest of Charlotte, Lake Norman, the state’s largest manmade lake, was
created in 1963 when Duke Energy dammed the Catawba River. Named after former
Duke Energy president Norman Atwater Cocke, this paradise-in-the-making wasn’t
even considered a viable year-around place to live in the 1960s. Most people who
leased the lakefront lots from Duke Power’s Forestry Department used them as
fishing and hunting campgrounds. It wasn’t until the completion of Interstate 77
in the 1970s and the increase in available services in the 1980s that Lake
Norman real estate started to attract buyers and business owners who were
quickly sold on its beautiful vistas and choice location.
Lake Norman touches on four counties(Mecklenburg,
Iredell, Lincoln and Catawba) and has a surface area of more than 32,000 acres. |

| The massive lake is 34 miles
long and 8 miles wide at its widest point. Its sheer size dwarfs the
other ten lakes on the Catawba River, as it is almost as large as all of
them combined! Lake Norman is 130 feet deep at its deepest point. The
once sparsely populated area is now one of the most rapidly growing and
in-demand waterfront home and vacation locations in North Carolina and
surrounding states. Lake Norman properties appeal to a wide variety of people,
from families to retirees to couples just looking for a getaway week or weekend. |
